Get familiar with basic drafting tools and conventions as you learn to draft floorplans, elevations, and sections. And then take it a step further, learning the tricks that will lift your drawings off the page and make them sing! The materials fee buys you a drafting kit to use and take home.

Welcome and Orientation to Yestermorrow’s campus

Introduction: The Art of Precision
Getting familiar with the essential tools of drafting:
- Lead holder, straightedge, parallel rule, adjustable triangle
- Papers: trace, vellum, plastic film (Mylar is a trademark)
- Drafting tape
- leads, Sharpener (hardness, pointing leads)
Setting up the sheet:
- Planning placement, registration marks, boarder
- Drawing the first line
Exercise 1: Shapes and line weight
11:00-11:30
Lettering
Exercise 2: Practice letters and numbers in parallel lines and photocopy boxes
11:30-12:00
Introduction to drawing conventions:
- Orthographic projections (plan, section, elevation)
- Scale
- Line weight
- Dimensioning
- “Blue Prints”, black lines, non-print
- Set of drawings (A-1…S-1…E-1…)
12:00-1:00 Lunch

Exercise 3: Measuring and drawing an object to scale
Gather information for the drawing; measure a piece of furniture and do a basic rough sketch on which you’ll base your drawing. Note dimensions on your sketch.

Lay out your furniture drawing, referring to your sketch information. Work on line weight.
Include boarder, titles, scale, and dimensions.
3:00-3:30
Go over house plans and become familiar with project before visit.

Questions and review of material from Day 1. Discuss plan for Day 2.

Exercise 4: Sketch one room cabin fantasy project, must have a loft with stairs. No bigger then 15’x20’. Draw at ¼”= 1’–0” scale.
