Architectural Freehand Drawing (April 7-9, 2013)
Frustrated trying to express your inner creativity through sketches and drawing? Develop the skills to communicate your ideas clearly and accurately with sketches, while at the same time, learning some ‘tricks of the trade' to create more sophisticated renderings. Techniques such as adding shadow, creating depth, and drawing in perspective can create a level of sophistication that will add to your graphic presentations. Some prior drawing experience is preferred. Bring a sketchbook.
Drafting 101 (April 10-11, 2013)
Get familiar with basic drafting tools and conventions as you learn to draft floorplans, elevations, and sections. And then take it a step further, learning the tricks that will lift your drawings off the page and make them sing! The materials fee buys you a drafting kit to use and take home.
Architectural Modelmaking (April 12, 2013)
Modelmaking is one of the best ways to convey design ideas in addition to being a rewarding hobby. Models can show everything from how a building is sited in a landscape to specific connection details found in construction. While in the studio, students will learn how to scale their projects from existing buildings and drawings into a manageable model. Topics to be covered will include an overview of model types, materials choices, and modeling techniques and tools. Students can come to class with a project in mind, find a local building, or design a project to model.
Intro to SketchUp (April 13-14, 2013)
Developed for the conceptual stages of design, SketchUp is a powerful, yet easy-to-learn 3D program. Using a few simple tools, we will create 3D models for quick massing studies, exploring and comparing design options, set up perspectives from hand drawings, and explore ways to use SketchUp for presentations. The first day will be spent mastering the basic tools needed to create massing models. On day two, we’ll explore more advanced concepts, including texturing and adding shadows. Students are encouraged to bring a floor plan and/or elevation that can be scanned to be used as a drawing base for the final project. Note: Students must bring a laptop computer with a free SkechUp download.
