Course Objectives
By learning the fundamentals of the "business end" of the design/build process the student will be grounded when he/she goes on to explore the more creative aspects of the design/build process. Understanding how to estimate a project and what regulations must be followed can actually free you to push the envelope as you go on to design your project.
Recommended Reading
Reading prior to the class is not required. During the course we will use the "Means Residential Cost Data" estimating guide, AIA contracts, the ADA, the International Building Code and the CABO code.
Tools/Materials to Bring
Students should bring any questions related to estimating, permitting or general contracting. Feel free to bring plans of your own to estimate, although this is not required.
Draft Schedule/Outline
The class will be in a seminar/discussion format. During the costing section we will go through the process of doing take-offs and tailoring the level of estimate detail to the level of design. During the contract section we will discuss various arrangements for getting a project built and the contractual arrangements that are possible amongst builder, owner and designer. The class will meet from 9AM to 5PM.
