Wood veneers provide opportunities to take your furniture projects to the next level. This comprehensive class covers the full range of techniques when working with veneer. We’ll learn how veneer is made and discuss purchasing, inspecting, flattening, and pre- and post-repairing techniques. As each student makes a small organically-shaped veneer tabletop with a hardwood edge, we will explore both symmetrical and asymmetrical veneer pattern-matching, opening up a variety of potential new design aesthetics. We’ll also explore hands-on techniques by applying a hardwood edge to a French or S-curved table edge, yielding a perfect fit on organic shapes and providing a wide variety of opportunities for curved tabletop work. Various seaming techniques will include the instructor’s pioneered wavy contour seam, which can render a veneer seam nearly invisible. We’ll finish by delving into the details of taping, edge gluing, pressing, post-pressing, sanding, and color touch up.
