Course Syllabus
Saturday:
Ecological Water issues and realties (exploring the issues of Water Security, the Water Cycle, and Water Budgets)
Permaculture Designs for addressing freshwater needs (Mountains, plains, desert and tropical applications will be touched on with an emphasis on eastern temperate environments)
Watershed restoration, Erosion control techniques, stabilizing stream banks and reclaiming riparian zones.
Lunch
Integrated low-tech and passive water store techniques including: Developing springs, groundwater recharge areas, swales, siting and designing ponds, cisterns and tanks, and rainwater catchment.
Moving water with gravity fed systems, pumps and ditches.
Sunday:
Integrated Stormwater Approaches: Rain garden and rain planter designs Landscaping with Native perennial and edibles
Biofiltration of stormwater runoff from buildings, parking lots and roadways.
Lunch
Prevention of Water Contamination: Composting toilets and humanure
Treatment of Contaminated Water: Grey water systems, Intentional wetland wastewater treatment, Pond restorers.
