Yestermorrow Summer Lecture Series 2006
Wednesdays at 7:30pm

Yestermorrow Design/Build School's annual free summer lecture series begins on Wednesday, July 5 with a talk by University of Pennsylvania Professor Emeritus and acclaimed sculptor Bob Engman, and winds up eight Wednesday's later with architect David Sellers' insight into the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. In between, a diverse group of lecturers will share their knowledge on topics ranging from furniture craftsmanship to regenerative design to compassionate architecture. All lectures are free and open to the general public.

Engman, whose sculptures are included in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum , the Museum of Modern Art , the Whitney Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and others, will speak on the study of form and three-dimensional design. His own sculptural pieces straddle a variety of materials and sizes, though he is best known for his large-scale works in cast bronze. His art frequently juxtaposes knife-sharp edges with soft curves.

On July 12, internationally acclaimed furnituremaker Garret Hack will present "From Harvest to High Art," an overview of the entire woodworking process beginning with the harvesting and skidding of trees from his own property with a work horse, through to the finishing touches of his elegant contemporary furniture based on classic forms. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Preservation, Home Furniture, and the back cover of Fine Woodworking. He is the author of two books on hand tools, and is a contributing editor for Fine Woodworking.

A practicing architect for 25 years and internationally-recognized specialist in issues related to green design, Bill Reed is President of the Integrative Design Collaborative, a consulting organization working to create beneficial alternatives to conventional design, construction and management of our environment. His July 19 th lecture, "Regenerative Design: Thinking and Practicing Beyond Sustainability," will postulate that, rather than seek to do less damage to the environment, designers must shift their practice world-view to one that seeks to work with the environment - using the health of ecological systems as a basis for design.

Duo Dickinson stops by Yestermorrow on July 26 for a lecture entitled, "What's a Nice Person Like You Doing in a House Like That?" Dickinson believes that architects, developers, builders, real estate agents and bankers often conspire to prevent homeowners from controlling their biggest asset and most intimate possession - their home. Dickinson is an architect with more than 20 national awards under his belt. His work has been published in more than 40 venues, including the New York Times, Architectural Record, and House Beautiful. He is also the author of six books, over 30 articles in more than a dozen national publications, and has taught at Yale University and Roger Williams College .

Architect Lisa Hiserodt brings her vision of "compassionate architecture" to Yestermorrow on Wednesday, August 2. Hiserodt, who is an architect with Boston 's Next Phase Studios, has focused her practice on implementing a compassionate set of design parameters that resonate with our deepest sense of who we are. It is only by doing this that we can break from the sterile design parameters that are accepted with little question.

On August 9, Fred Øesch presents "Pave a Parking Lot with Paradise ," during which he will discuss alternative solutions toward affordable, healthful, energy independent, and autonomous living. Øesch is the principal of Øesch Environmental Design near Charlottesville , VA. He has designed and built alternative architecture, custom interiors, furniture, and fine art for more than 30 years. His specialties include solar design, green timberframe, strawbale construction, living earth roofs, and organic environmental control systems.

Karrie Jacobs is the founding editor-in-chief of Dwell Magazine. She is also an essayist and architecture critic. Her August 16 th lecture, "14,520 Miles; 53 Houses; 100,000 bucks," details her road trip across America in search of the perfect $100,000 house, a quixotic journey that began with a two-week Home Design/Build program at Yestermorrow, and ended -- after stops along the way at Taos Earthships and Elvis Presley's birthplace -- with the publication of her new book.

Andy Shapiro's goal is to create inspiring, high performance buildings that meet the needs of the occupants, the builders and the earth.  He has provided energy and other green building design consulting services for 25 years to a wide variety of clients, including owners, architects, engineers and builders, as well as towns, housing developers, universities, businesses and electric utilities.  His August 23 rd lecture, "Homes for the 21 st Century," will be a showcase of several of his recent innovative, high performance, and net-zero energy projects.

The series concludes on August 30th with David Sellers' presentation, "Frank Lloyd Wright: Then and Now." Sellers, a Warren , VT , architect who was named one of the 100 foremost architects in the world by Architectural Digest, has extensively studied the work and innovations of Wright, especially his focus on art glass and light screens.
