Ecological Design/Build Costa Rica

This class will work with top environmentalists, construction designers and watershed experts to help design a 21 st Century "green" community and garden for the tropics. Pueblo Verde is a 25-acre green residential development within a 500-acre reforestation preserve in Paraiso, Costa Rica.  The class will evaluate and design a site plan for the second phase of Pueblo Verde. Participants will generate a master plan based on ecological constraints and sustainable design principles. Each student will also select a lot within the community and develop a home and garden design, a set of plans and a model for presentation to the larger community. The class will also spend time each day with hands-on building of one of the projects underway. The Yestermorrow design/build process draws from an understanding of local and historic architecture, land restoration, erosion control, natural cooling systems, renewable energy, green building, local material sourcing, micro-climate design, and engineered ecological water supply and water treatment. This project will be a model for others throughout Costa Rica and beyond.
