Ecological Design in the Built Environment: Core Curriculum for the Certificate in Sustainable Building and Design
Note: This course is open to students enrolled in the Certificate in Sustainable Building and Design program.
Part 1: Home-Scale Whole Systems Design
The first half of this Core Curriculum, Home-Scale Whole Systems Design, will focus on whole systems, structure and site integration for home and homestead. Beginning with the building blocks of sustainable design, students will study ecological processes and the Permaculture principles and techniques that allow for the design of regenerative, productive landscapes and self-sufficient human settlement. Moving to the next level, students will take on the challenges of designing a residential scale structure in harmony with the surrounding environment. Discussions on siting, energy, materials, water, envelope and systems design will provide students with the roadmap toward creating zero net-energy, healthy, comfortable living spaces that are integrated with the environment they depend upon. In the process, students will gain the basic drawing, drafting and modeling skills that will enable them to design at any scale.
Part 2: Ecological Planning, Design & Construction
The second half of the Core Curriculum, Ecological Planning, Design and Construction, will provide a framework for a whole systems approach to environmental, value-based planning, design and construction at a larger scale, including multi-family residential and commercial buildings, communities, towns, and institutions. Through lectures, seminars, field trips, and a design charrette, we will seek to gain various perspectives – from designers, builders, owners, facility managers, developers, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and residents – on ecological, or sustainable, design and construction. Whole site assessment and planning will include infrastructure, trans-portation, energy, and long-term stewardship. Green building, materials, and systems will be explored at a larger scale and for mixed use, and various systems for rating green buildings will be discussed. Students will develop a holistic framework that will inform and direct their future ecological practices.
